Caleño’s favourite books of 2021 so far

Some people spend every free moment with their nose in a book, others are strict bedtime or commuter readers. Then there’s the holiday hoarders, who save all their favourite books for those relaxing moments in the sunshine. But since we’ve been in lockdown, many of us have lost our usual routines; no longer do we have a work commute and there’s certainly been no ‘holidaying’. If there’s one thing to be thankful for though, it’s having more time. More time to get stuck into a book, be it on the sofa with a cup of tea, in the bath with a Caleño cocktail or snuggled up in bed. In fact, there’s something quite wonderful about getting lost in a book, encaptured in another world and for a few precious moments escaping from your own thoughts.

From fantasy novels to real life stories, entrepreneurial books to cooking inspiration, here are our Caleño team’s favourite books of 2021 so far.

Ellie’s pick – Founder of Caleño

Joyful: The surprising power of ordinary things to create extraordinary happiness, by Ingrid Fetell Lee

“Joyful is about finding joy in the world around us and surrounding ourselves with it. Given the past 12 months, I think we could all do with a little help in uncovering those small joyful moments, using them to help us bring more joy to each day.”

I Feel Bad About My Neck, by Nora Ephron

“Boomer, millennial or gen-z, this little book is a modern classic. Nora Ephron’s unwavering wit, admirable wisdom and utter hilariousness, only amplified by the equally hilarious and wise Dolly Alderton in the foreword, makes for an ideal wind-down read. Whether kicking back on your sofa, in your garden or even on a park bench, this book is an essential 2021 read.”

She Made It: A toolkit for female founders in the digital age, by Angelica Malin

“She made it, is the secret weapon for any female entrepreneur. With honesty, practicality and a big helping of epic and successful women in business, this book offers a voice of reason and encouragement that could be hugely influential in our life decisions.”

Amber’s pick – Social Media Manager

Eat Happy: 30 minute feel good food, by Melissa Hemsley

“In the last year, we’ve had to make the most of the little things in life. In our house, food is a way of escaping to all corners of the world, which I’m sure translates into many homes right now. This book of healthy and delicious food transports you to sunshine and a place of all round good vibes.”

Christie’s pick – Operations Manager

Where the Crawdads Sing, by Delia Owens

“A beautifully written book, Where the Crawdads Sing, tells the story of ‘Marsh Girl’ Kya, and her resilience and survival after being abandoned by her family. It’s as engrossing as it is moving – the perfect escapism for lockdown.”

Atomic Habits, by James Clear
Atomic Habits is a comprehensive and practical guide on how to create good habits, break bad ones, and get one percent better every day. I do not believe you will find a more actionable book on the subject of habits and improvement. If you’re having trouble changing your habits, then I would recommend giving this a read.”
